A journal of IFAC, the International Federation of Automatic Control

This international journal covers the application of control theory, operations research, computer science and engineering principles to the solution of process control problems. In addition to the traditional chemical processing and manufacturing applications, the scope of process control problems involves a wide range of applications that includes energy processes, nano-technology, systems biology, bio-medical engineering, pharmaceutical processing technology, energy storage and conversion, smart grid, and data analytics among others.

Papers on the theory in these areas will also be accepted provided the theoretical contribution is aimed at the application and the development of process control techniques.

Topics covered include:

• Control applications• Process monitoring• Plant-wide control• Process control systems• Control techniques and algorithms• Process modelling and simulation• Design methods

Advanced design methods exclude well established and widely studied traditional design techniques such as PID tuning and its many variants. Applications in fields such as control of automotive engines, machinery and robotics are not deemed suitable unless a clear motivation for the relevance to process control is provided.

Special Issue on Fault tolerant control of nonlinear processes

Nonlinear processes are prevalent in various industries, such as chemical, electrical, and mechanical engineering. These processes often exhibit complex dynamics, making them susceptible to unexpected faults. The integrity and performance of these systems can be severely compromised in the presence of faults, leading to production losses, increased maintenance costs, and safety hazards. Thus, there is a critical need for fault tolerant control (FTC) techniques that can ensure safe and reliable operation, even in the presence of faults. While considerable research efforts have been dedicated to FTC in linear systems, the challenges become more significant when dealing with nonlinear processes. The inherent complexity of nonlinear systems, along with the uncertainty of faults, poses additional difficulties in designing FTC strategies. This special issue seeks to address these challenges and provide a platform for exchanging ideas and knowledge on innovative approaches and methodologies in the field. The goal is to advance the state-of-the-art in FTC and enhance the reliability, robustness, and efficiency of nonlinear process control.
