Aims and Scope

Network problems are pervasive in our modern technological society, as witnessed by our reliance on physical networks that provide power, communication, and transportation. As well, a number of processes can be modeled using logical networks, as in the scheduling of interdependent tasks, the dating of archaeological artifacts, or the compilation of subroutines comprising a large computer program. Networks provide a common framework for posing and studying problems that often have wider applicability than their originating context.

The goal of this journal is to provide a central forum for the distribution of timely information about network problems, their design and mathematical analysis, as well as efficient algorithms for carrying out optimization on networks. The nonstandard modeling of diverse processes using networks and network concepts is also of interest. Consequently, the disciplines that are useful in studying networks are varied, including applied mathematics, operations research, computer science, discrete mathematics, and economics.

Networks publishes material on the analytic modeling of problems using networks, the mathematical analysis of network problems, the design of computationally efficient network algorithms, and innovative case studies of successful network applications. We do not typically publish works that fall in the realm of pure graph theory (without significant algorithmic and modeling contributions) or papers that deal with engineering aspects of network design. Since the audience for this journal is then necessarily broad, articles that impact multiple application areas or that creatively use new or existing methodologies are especially appropriate. We seek to publish original, well-written research papers that make a substantive contribution to the knowledge base. In addition, tutorial and survey articles are welcomed. All manuscripts are carefully refereed.

Networks, an International Journal, publishes material on the analytic modeling of problems using networks, the mathematical analysis of network problems, the design of computationally efficient network algorithms, and innovative case studies of successful network applications. Networks will publish a special issue dedicated to "Interdiction and Stochastic Programming on Networks." Scope: Kevin Wood's work in network interdiction and stochastic programming led to foundational methods, novel models, and impactful applications. In his memory, Networks will issue a call for papers that can include, but are not limited to: Topics of interest for this call for papers include but are not limited to: Deterministic and stochastic network interdiction; Multi-level network games; Two- and multi-stage stochastic programs on networks; Large-scale network decomposition algorithms. Guest Editors: Prof. Javier Salmeron Naval Postgraduate School, United States Prof. David Morton Northwestern University, United States Keywords: Interdiction; publication; stochastic programming. Submission Guidelines/Instructions: Please note that all papers submitted for this special issue will undergo the standard peer review procedures established by Networks. Important Dates: Submission start: March 1st, 2026 Deadline for submissions: December 31st, 2026 Manuscript Preparation and Submission: Submitted papers must be original, unpublished and not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. All submissions must fit within the domain statement of the journal and will be judged for their relevance to the special issue's scope, innovativeness, and the extent of practical research contribution. Contributions should be prepared according to the instructions to authors that can be found on the journal homepage. Authors should submit and upload their contributions using the submission site indicating in their cover letter that the paper is intended for this special issue. Other inquiries should be sent directly to the Guest Editors in charge of this issue: Javier Salmeron (jsalmero@nps.edu) and David Morton (david.morton@northwestern.edu). https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/page/journal/10970037/homepage/call-for-papers/si-2026-000168
