Aims and Scope

Measurement + Control is an open access journal that publishes peer-reviewed practical and technical research and news pieces from both the science and engineering industry and academia. Whilst focusing more broadly on topics of relevance for practitioners in instrumentation and control, the journal also includes updates on both product and business announcements and information on technical advances.

The DC microgrid has demonstrated superiority over the ac microgrid with respect to reliability, efficiency, control complexity, integration of renewable energy sources, and connection of DC loads. Despite these numerous advantages, designing and implementing an appropriate control and protection system for DC microgrids remains a significant challenge. The challenge stems from the rapid rise of DC fault current which must be extinguished in the absence of naturally occurring zero crossings, potentially leading to sustained arcs. As a result, DC microgrids pose a number of technical challenges including protection and control. Protection challenges require addressing grid-code compliance, mis-coordination/ sympathetic tripping of protective devices due to high penetration of distributed energy resources, design of an optimum grounding system, standardization, and topology-based coordination of protective devices. Further protection issues in DC microgrids encompass different entities, including resilience establishment that includes cyber-attacks upon manipulation of control networks with protection schemes, and mechanisms to address operational integrity as well as consumers’ privacy. Protection schemes for DC microgrids must be aligned and coordinated with the control system. Several control concepts such as multi-agent system, distributed control, networked control, cooperative control, and sparse communication can be effectively used to facilitate operation of control systems. High penetration levels of intermittent renewable energy sources further impose different set of challenges including voltage rise & fluctuation, reverse power flows, temporary overvoltage, power quality deterioration and issues related to protection and voltage/current imbalance. Integration of distributed energy storage systems including battery storage can be used to alleviate the aforementioned issues.
