Technological advancements have firmly established AFM as a pivotal analytical tool for conducting force spectroscopy, encompassing acoustic force and interaction force spectroscopy for individual molecules. AFM is employed to assess the mechanical properties of single polymer molecules, proteins, and individual chemical bonds. Biomolecules, such as DNA and proteins, can be precisely tethered between microspheres and a surface, followed by examination through acoustic forces during AFM operations. Additionally, AFM techniques are employed to probe the mechanical robustness of chemical bonds. Moreover, the exploration of acoustic force sensitivity spans a wide range of objectives through the application of multifrequency AFM operations. This Special Collection aims to provide a platform for integrating interdisciplinary research on the advancements in single- and multi-frequency AFM techniques for force spectroscopy. It offers an opportunity to showcase the various ways in which single- and multi-frequency AFM are utilized to study the sensitivity of acoustic and interaction forces among molecules. We invite research and review articles that highlight novel experimental or theoretical AFM techniques for force spectroscopy applications.
