Call For Papers

Applied Mathematical Modelling is an academic journal published by Elsevier. (ISSN 0307-904X, impact factor 5.5).

Aims & Scope Applied Mathematical Modelling focuses on significant and novel scientific developments for mathematical modelling and computational methods and tools for engineering, industrial and environmental systems and processes leading to future innovations and novel technologies. The topics considered are: heat transfer, fluid mechanics, computational fluid dynamics and electromagnetics, and transport phenomena; solid mechanics and mechanics of metals; electromagnets and magnetohydrodynamics; reliability modelling and system optimization; modelling of inventory, industrial, manufacturing and logistics systems with managerial insights; engineering systems and structures; mineral and energy resources; software engineering developments; digital twins; materials; unmanned vehicles; robotics; network traffic control; energy sustainability models; optimization; population dynamics with realistic scenarios; high-performance methods for data-driven engineering applications; numerical procedures; computational intelligence in complex engineering problems. Applied Mathematical Modelling is primarily interested in: Papers developing increased insights into real-world problems through novel analytical or semi-analytical mathematical and computational modelling. Papers with multi- and interdisciplinary topics, including linking with data driven models and applications. Papers on novel applications or a combination with the above. Papers employing existing methods must demonstrate significant novelty in the solution of practical problems. Model validation, verification and reproducibility is a fundamental principle for published papers. Papers based on fuzzy logic in decision-making, financial mathematics, heuristic algorithms, neural networks, data modelling, game-theoretical, fractional differential equations, bifurcation and numerical methods papers are not considered unless they solve practical problems, supported by reasonable empirical evidence. Submissions with no real-world application will not be considered. This journal has an Open Archive. All published items, including research articles, have unrestricted access and will remain permanently free to read and download 48 months after publication. All papers in the Archive are subject to Elsevier's user license.

Special Issues

Special Issue on Mathematical Modeling of Disasters: New Trends and Perspectives Submission Date: 2026-11-30 The aim of the proposed special model is to collect papers focused on mathematical modeling and resulting computer simulations of important challenging natural phenomena often related to natural disasters. Examples of possible applications include mathematical modeling of tsunami phenomena on a globe model based on shallow water equations, modeling of thermal inversion and pollution propagation in urban areas based on advection-diffusion-reaction equations, modeling avalanches in mountainous areas, modeling wildfires based on a nonlinear models with diffusion, advection and radiation terms, modeling earthquakes based on nonlinear wave equations, modeling atmospheric phenomena, including climate change using Navier-Stokes-Boussinesq equations, among others. Mathematical modeling and the resulting computer simulations can have wide applications to challenging problems important to humanity. Guest editors: Prof. Maciej Paszyński Faculty of Computer Science, AGH University of Krakow, Poland Email: [email protected] Prof. Jacek Leszczyński Faculty of Power and Energy, AGH University of Krakow, Poland Email: [email protected] Special issue information: This special issue focuses on the development and application of advanced mathematical modeling and numerical methods for simulating complex natural and environmental phenomena. Contributions that explore finite element methods, physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), and other computational approaches for solving hyperbolic and parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs), particularly in the context of non-linear problems, are highly encouraged. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, tsunami, wildfire, avalanche, and pollution modeling, as well as the simulation of atmospheric phenomena. The issue aims to bridge theoretical advances in mathematical modeling with practical, high-impact applications in natural hazard prediction, environmental assessment, and scientific computing. Manuscript submission information: The journal's submission platform (Submit your manuscript | Applied Mathematical Modelling) will be open for submissions to this Special Issue from Mar 01, 2026. Please refer to the Guide for Authors to prepare your manuscript and select the article type of “VSI:APM_Mathematical Modeling of Disasters” when submitting your manuscript online. Both the Guide for Authors and the submission portal could be found on the Journal Homepage: Applied Mathematical Modelling | Journal | ScienceDirect.com by Elsevier. The impact of SI contributions should be clearly demonstrated in the context of the theme of the special issue. Papers that do not directly address this theme are considered out of scope and are subject to immediate rejection. Special Issue on Advanced Mathematical Modelling and Computational Methods for Insurance and Risk Analytics Submission Date: 2027-01-31 This special issue, entitled 'Advanced Mathematical Modelling and Computational Methods for Insurance and Risk Analytics', highlights recent methodological advances at the interface of mathematical formulations and computational methods with real world applications. We seek high-quality contributions focusing on the formulation, analysis, and numerical simulation of complex risk structures, emphasizing how innovative frameworks address practical implications in risk management, solvency, and modern insurance regulations. Submissions covering advanced stochastic processes, catastrophe risk, quantitative regulations, and high-performance numerical computing are highly welcome. Manuscripts integrating rigorous mathematics with empirical evidence are particularly valued, and authors are strongly encouraged to share replication codes and data. Guest editors: Edit Rroji, University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy, [email protected] Andrea Perchiazzo, University of Eastern Piedmont, Italy, [email protected] Lorenzo Mercuri, University of Milan, Italy, [email protected] Special issue information: We seek high-quality contributions focusing on the formulation, analysis, and numerical simulation of complex risk structures for insurance problems, emphasizing how innovative mathematical modelling addresses practical challenges in risk management, solvency, and modern regulations. We welcome original research papers that fall within, but are not limited to, the following core thematic areas: 1. Advanced Stochastic Modelling: Continuous-time processes capturing complex claim dynamics (e.g., self-exciting, feedback, and regime-switching models) for pricing and risk assessment (e.g., underwriting, asset-liability management, or reserving risk). 2. Catastrophe and Systemic Risk Modelling: Mathematical formulations and rare-event simulations for catastrophic and systemic perils. Focus includes non-linear dependence structures (e.g., vine/Lévy copulas) applied to climate-induced risks, accumulation perils, and cyber or financial contagion. 3. Quantitative Regulation, Health, and Longevity Modelling: Stochastic methods and computational frameworks for solvency, healthcare dynamics, and longevity/mortality risks. Emphasis on simulation, predictive analytics, and stochastic control for premium setting, reserving, and risk mitigation. 4. High-Performance and Numerical Computing: Numerical frameworks, algorithms, and machine learning architectures for high-dimensional insurance problems. Topics cover advanced Monte Carlo, numerical SDEs, and high-performance (HPC) or emerging quantum computing applications for large-scale scenario generation. Manuscripts integrating rigorous mathematics, innovative methods, and empirical evidence will be particularly valued. We will also strongly encourage authors to share replication codes and data.
