Special Issues

Special Issue on Advanced Manufacturing of Materials Submission Date: 2026-06-30 Advanced Manufacturing of materials emerges from the convergence of 3D printing and smart materials, enabling the fabrication of components with enhanced functionalities and dimensional responsiveness. These parts can undergo shape transformations or activate specific functions when stimulated by external energy inputs, such as heat, light, or magnetic fields. This paradigm opens a compelling research avenue that extends beyond spatial geometry into the realms of timedependent behavior and multifunctionality. XD printing is among the most rapidly evolving domains, driven primarily by advances in active and stimuli-responsive materials. Despite its immense potential for innovation and imagination, its adoption remains limited, particularly in industrial contexts. This Special Issue aims to showcase how scientific breakthroughs in XD printing can translate into practical and scalable industrial applications. To realize this potential, critical factors such as physical properties, mechanical robustness, environmental stability, and unintended side effects must be rigorously evaluated. These considerations are essential for designing next-generation manufacturing processes and materials tailored for industrial deployment. As an emerging field, XD printing demands creativity, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a thoughtful epistemological framework. While bottom-up design strategies are often favored, unconventional and exploratory approaches are equally valuable. Accordingly, this Special Issue will highlight recent advancements in 3D and XD printing technologies, emphasizing their correlation with industrial needs and applications. It seeks to foster dialogue between scientific innovation and real-world implementation, paving the way for transformative manufacturing solutions. Researchers are invited to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that discuss recent advancements in 3D and XD printing (but not limited to) the following themes: Materials Design Innovating Process Design AI and ML methods in 3D and XD printing Simulation in the field of 3D and XD printing Process Control (including insitu monitoring) Quality Control Microstructure-Property Correlation
