Digital Social Sciences (DSS) is an academic journal published by Innovative Insights (SMC-Private) Limited. (ISSN 3078-4972).

Journal Focus & Scope Digital Social Sciences (Digit. Soc. Sci.) ISSN: 3078-4980 (Online), 3078-4972 (Print) is a semi-annual peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to advancing the understanding of how digital technologies transform social structures, behaviors, institutions, and relations. The journal provides a critical, interdisciplinary forum for the development, application, and reflection of digital research methodologies within the social sciences. DSS aims to bridge the gap between computational innovation and social inquiry. It responds to the challenge of rapidly growing digital data sources (born-digital archives, social media, administrative data) and computational methods (big data analytics, network analysis, simulation, NLP) outpacing existing theoretical and ethical frameworks in traditional social science publishing. The journal prioritizes work that not only uses digital tools but also critically examines their epistemological, ethical, and societal implications. Specifically, DSS aims to publish high-quality original research at the intersection of social science disciplines (sociology, political science, economics, anthropology, geography, law, communication studies) and digital methodologies. The journal fosters critical reflection on the history, current practice, and theory of digital social research, including issues of Indigenous data sovereignty, postcolonial digital studies, gender and technology, algorithmic bias, digital inequality, surveillance, and data justice.

Special Issue on Digital Social Sciences – Call for Papers, Vol. 4, Issue 1 (2027): Living with Algorithms Submission Date: 2027-01-30 Submission Deadline: 31 January 2027 Notification of Decision: within 1 month of submission Publication: March 2027 Description: Digital Social Sciences (Digit. Soc. Sci.; ISSN 3078-4980 Online, 3078-4972 Print) invites original research for its next issue. The issue will focus on one question: what happens to people, institutions and societies when algorithms help make decisions about them. Algorithmic systems now shape who gets credit, jobs, welfare and visibility. They also shape what news people see, how public services are delivered and how laws are enforced. These systems are often presented as neutral and efficient. In practice, they redistribute power. They can widen existing inequalities, change how citizens relate to the state, and alter how people understand themselves and each other. These effects are especially visible in the Global South, where digital systems are adopted quickly but regulation, data infrastructure and public scrutiny often lag behind. We welcome theoretically grounded and empirically rigorous work that examines life under algorithmic systems from any social science, legal or humanities perspective. Contributions may address, but are not limited to: How states and public bodies use automated decision-making, and what this means for accountability, due process and citizenship Algorithmic bias and its effects on gender, class, caste, ethnicity, disability and geography Platform work, algorithmic management and the changing conditions of labour Recommender systems, content moderation, and their effects on political discourse, misinformation and democratic participation Legal and regulatory responses to AI and data-driven systems, including data protection, consent and liability Resistance, workarounds and everyday agency: how individuals and communities interpret, contest or adapt to algorithmic systems AI companions, generative AI and the reshaping of intimacy, trust and social interaction Algorithmic systems in education, health and finance, and their effects on access and inclusion New methods for studying opaque systems, such as algorithm audits, computational social science, digital ethnography and mixed methods We particularly encourage comparative studies, research grounded in specific local contexts, and work that brings policy or practical relevance to theoretical debates. Article types: Research articles, review articles, policy analyses and short communications.
