Special Issue on Sustainable and Circular Manufacturing: Materials, Processes, and Design Strategies
Submission Date: 2025-12-31

Sustainability and circular economy principles are reshaping the future of advanced manufacturing. As industries strive to minimize environmental impact, there is a growing demand for eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient processes, and circular design strategies that promote resource efficiency and waste reduction. Sustainable manufacturing focuses on reducing carbon footprints, optimizing energy consumption, and utilizing renewable resources, while circular manufacturing emphasizes closed-loop systems that enable material reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling. Innovations in biodegradable polymers, green composites, low-carbon alloys, and additive manufacturing for waste reduction are critical to achieving these goals. Furthermore, process innovations such as energy-efficient machining, hybrid manufacturing, and digital sustainability tools (e.g., AI-driven lifecycle assessments) are driving the transition toward greener industrial ecosystems. This special issue invites original research and review articles exploring new materials, processes, and design methodologies that enhance sustainability and circularity in manufacturing. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Sustainable Material Development (biodegradable, recycled, and bio-based materials) Energy-efficient Manufacturing Processes (low-energy AM, machining, and forming) Circular Economy Strategies for Manufacturing (remanufacturing, reusability, and material recovery) Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Carbon Footprint Reduction in Manufacturing AI and Digital Twins for Sustainable Process Optimization Waste-Free and Net-Zero Manufacturing Approaches Green Additive Manufacturing and Sustainable 3D Printing Technologies Design for Sustainability and Circularity (Design for Excellence (DfX) principles in product development) Hybrid Manufacturing for Resource Optimization End-of-Life Strategies: Recycling and Upcycling of Manufactured Components Advanced and efficient systems for monitoring and managing pavement performance and large-scale data

Special Issue on Advanced Manufacturing of Materials
Submission Date: 2026-06-30

Advanced Manufacturing of materials emerges from the convergence of 3D printing and smart materials, enabling the fabrication of components with enhanced functionalities and dimensional responsiveness. These parts can undergo shape transformations or activate specific functions when stimulated by external energy inputs, such as heat, light, or magnetic fields. This paradigm opens a compelling research avenue that extends beyond spatial geometry into the realms of timedependent behavior and multifunctionality. XD printing is among the most rapidly evolving domains, driven primarily by advances in active and stimuli-responsive materials. Despite its immense potential for innovation and imagination, its adoption remains limited, particularly in industrial contexts. This Special Issue aims to showcase how scientific breakthroughs in XD printing can translate into practical and scalable industrial applications. To realize this potential, critical factors such as physical properties, mechanical robustness, environmental stability, and unintended side effects must be rigorously evaluated. These considerations are essential for designing next-generation manufacturing processes and materials tailored for industrial deployment. As an emerging field, XD printing demands creativity, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a thoughtful epistemological framework. While bottom-up design strategies are often favored, unconventional and exploratory approaches are equally valuable. Accordingly, this Special Issue will highlight recent advancements in 3D and XD printing technologies, emphasizing their correlation with industrial needs and applications. It seeks to foster dialogue between scientific innovation and real-world implementation, paving the way for transformative manufacturing solutions. Researchers are invited to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that discuss recent advancements in 3D and XD printing (but not limited to) the following themes: Materials Design Innovating Process Design AI and ML methods in 3D and XD printing Simulation in the field of 3D and XD printing Process Control (including insitu monitoring) Quality Control Microstructure-Property Correlation
