JOB DESCRIPTION

Develop new concepts and design approaches to advance the state of the art in radar sensing algorithms

What you will do

Imec is actively growing a new program on neuromorphic sensing, deeply fusing millimeter-wave radar with other sensor modalities using neuromorphic compute architectures. Our team has experts across all relevant domains – from antennas to AI – who together develop a new generation of sensory systems that push the envelope in terms of performance, size and power consumption. With this program, we target emerging applications from robotics (drones, cobotics, cars) to wearable, ubiquitous ultra-low power sensors. In this program, the aim is to radically re-think the way sensors are designed and built using truly integrated design approaches.

In this role you will:

take the lead in developing new concepts and design approaches as well as supporting other researchers pursuing concept and device breakthroughs. Model, build, test and evaluate novel concepts to advance the state of the art in radar sensing algorithms.
develop and implement robust, high-quality algorithms for sophisticated millimeter-wave radar applications in different domains such as autonomous vehicles, people-centric sensing and smart spaces.
perform research into data fusion with video and LiDAR
build functioning proof-of-concept prototypes using your development skills on both imec and off-the-shelf hardware.
collect data for algorithm training and validation.
provide critical feedback and design guidance on the development of neuromorphic systems.
collaborate with colleagues and external partners.
bring new ideas to the research program roadmap that have a high impact.
publish in relevant scientific journals, attend and present at top conferences, and patent new innovations.

What we do for you

We offer you the opportunity to join one of the world’s premier research centers in nanotechnology at its headquarters in Leuven, Belgium. With your talent, passion and expertise, you’ll become part of a team that makes the impossible possible. Together, we shape the technology that will determine the society of tomorrow.

We are proud of our open, multicultural, and informal working environment with ample possibilities to take initiative and show responsibility. We commit to supporting and guiding you in this process; not only with words but also with tangible actions. Through imec.academy, 'our corporate university', we actively invest in your development to further your technical and personal growth.

We are aware that your valuable contribution makes imec a top player in its field. Your energy and commitment are therefore appreciated by means of a competitive salary with many fringe benefits.

Who you are

To grow our neuromorphic sensing team, we are currently looking for an experienced researcher with a strong academic track record and a solid background in sensor signal processing and machine learning. We are looking for a creative mind – someone who is well-grounded but has the courage to question that very same ground. Furthermore, you:

have a PhD degree (or equivalent through experience) in electrical engineering, computer science, embedded software, or applied mathematics, with a strong background in signal processing and machine learning. Experience with radar signal processing is a plus.

have a strong background in mathematical modelling and algorithm development in statistical signal processing (and/or machine learning) with applications to navigation, localization, control systems, sensor fusion for e.g., camera, lidar, radar.

have a significant track record of relevant publications in the field of machine learning and signal processing.

have strong experience in programming e.g., Python, MATLAB. C/C++ is a plus.

have a strong awareness of hardware-constrained sensor implementations and hands-on experience with (radar) sensor hardware.

have experience executing sensor data recording campaigns.

have experience using radar and/or vision sensors, executing sensor data recording and labelling campaigns.

    are a pro-active problem-solver.

are fluent in English and are able to present technical results and choices clearly and concisely, given the international nature of imec’s research environment.

are a team-player, able to work in a collaborative environment with other researchers, PhD, group members, and experts from other technical fields, yet can work independently on complex problems.

    are OK with occasional travel.

Having experience acting as a technical liaison with customers and vendors is a plus, as well as experience generating or contributing to quotes, statements of work, and proposals.
