Special Issue on Advanced Target Detection, Tracking, and Imaging for Radar and Sonar Systems
Submission Date: 2026-10-31

Radar and sonar systems are critical for situational awareness in applications ranging from autonomous navigation and maritime surveillance to remote sensing. While advancements in signal processing have continuously improved their capabilities, significant challenges remain in reliably detecting weak targets, maintaining accurate tracks in cluttered and multi-target environments, and forming high-resolution images under adverse conditions. This Special Issue invites contributions on innovative signal processing techniques that push the boundaries of target detection, tracking, and imaging for radar and sonar systems. We seek high-quality research that addresses these intertwined challenges through novel model-based algorithms and data-driven approaches, including artificial intelligence and deep learning. The issue aims to showcase synergistic advancements that enhance the performance and robustness of next-generation sensing systems. Topics of interest for this call for papers include but are not restricted to: Advanced Detection Techniques: CFAR detectors, knowledge-aided detection, deep learning-based detectors. Target Tracking Algorithms: Multi-hypothesis tracking (MHT), random finite set filters, track-before-detect (TBD). High-Resolution Imaging: SAR/SAS, ISAR, tomographic imaging. Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning: AI for sensor data processing, deep learning for target recognition. Multi-Sensor Systems: Data fusion, distributed radar/sonar networks. Robust Processing: Techniques for clutter, reverberation, and low SNR conditions. Waveform Diversity & MIMO: Waveform design for joint functionalities.
