Journal of Biomechanics is an academic journal published by Elsevier. (ISSN 0021-9290, impact factor 2.9).

Aims & Scope The Journal of Biomechanics publishes reports of original and substantial findings using the principles of mechanics to explore biological problems. Analytical, as well as experimental papers may be submitted, and the journal accepts original articles, surveys and perspective articles (usually by Editorial invitation only), book reviews and letters to the Editor. The criteria for acceptance of manuscripts include excellence, novelty, significance, clarity, conciseness and interest to the readership. The Journal does not consider simultaneous submissions of manuscripts in multiple parts or series. Authors are encouraged to submit their manuscripts as independent, stand-alone manuscripts or consider submitting them sequentially, waiting for the outcome of the first submission before proceeding with the second one. Papers published in the journal may cover a wide range of topics in biomechanics, including, but not limited to: Fundamental Topics - Biomechanics of the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems, mechanics of hard and soft tissues, biofluid mechanics, mechanics of prostheses and implant-tissue interfaces, mechanics of cells. Cardiovascular and Respiratory Biomechanics - Mechanics of blood-flow, air-flow, mechanics of the soft tissues, flow-tissue or flow-prosthesis interactions. Cell Biomechanics - Biomechanic analyses of cells, membranes and sub-cellular structures; the relationship of the mechanical environment to cell and tissue response. Dental Biomechanics - Design and analysis of dental tissues and prostheses, mechanics of chewing. Functional Tissue Engineering - The role of biomechanical factors in engineered tissue replacements and regenerative medicine. Injury Biomechanics - Mechanics of impact and trauma, dynamics of man-machine interaction. Molecular Biomechanics - Mechanical analyses of biomolecules. Orthopedic Biomechanics - Mechanics of fracture and fracture fixation, mechanics of implants and implant fixation, mechanics of bones and joints, wear of natural and artificial joints. Rehabilitation Biomechanics - Analyses of gait, mechanics of prosthetics and orthotics. Sports Biomechanics - Mechanical analyses of sports performance. Journal of Biomechanics is affiliated to the American Society of Biomechanics, the International Society of Biomechanics, the European Society of Biomechanics, the Japanese Society for Clinical Biomechanics, the Australian and New Zealand Society of Biomechanics, and the Societe de Biomecanique .

Special Issue on Current perspectives and best practices for quantifying biomechanics with wearable inertial sensors Día de Entrega: 2026-10-01 This special issue highlights current perspectives and best practices for the use of inertial measurement units in human biomechanics research. Articles in this issue could include (1) expert perspectives on a particular topic or method, (2) recommendations for best practice, potentially including context on the state of the field, and may (3) provide example datasets and starter code. Readers of this issue will gain insight into current best practices (potentially with some historical or field-based context/discussion) and have a point to start from for applying that best practice in their own work. Special Issue on Virtual Twins of Human Organ Systems Día de Entrega: 2026-12-31 Virtual twins of human organ systems are becoming an increasingly powerful tool to understand the multiphysics behavior of organs, the impact of disease on an organ’s functional changes, and the efficacy of medical interventions. The reliability of such virtual twin-based numerical predictions, however, remains a challenge and depends on a wide range of factors. Availability of calibrated constitutive models, accurate model representation of microanatomy, understanding of the relationship of multiphysics behavior across scales, and adequate validation of virtual twin output are all important questions that need to be addressed. This kind of effort requires input from experts with a wide range of expertise including mechanics, biology, machine learning, and medicine. Most importantly, we are looking for contributions that not only outline state of the art techniques for virtual twin modeling but also demonstrate adequate and reliable model validation. Especially the latter is crucial in applying virtual human twins to clinical settings. Therefore, we are inviting contributions addressing: - Multidisciplinary approaches to creating anatomically accurate virtual twin models- Examples of successful model validation against experimental and/or clinical and patient data - Applications of virtual human twins to diagnosis, prognosis, drug development, surgical planning, etc. - Multiphysics, multimodal, multiscale approaches to virtual twins of human organ systems - Complimentary studies using both experiments and computation to better understand an organ system - Collaborative projects that aim to combine biology, mechanics, medicine, and any other discipline - Machine learning methods to support adequate verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification (VVUQ) principles in virtual human twin technology.
