Aims & Scope Diffusion and Reactions This interdisciplinary journal is devoted to the physics, chemistry and materials science of diffusion, mass transport, and reactivity of solids. The major part of each issue is devoted to articles on: (i) physics and chemistry of defects in solids; (ii) reactions in and on solids, e.g. intercalation, corrosion, oxidation, sintering; (iii) ion transport measurements, mechanisms and theory; (iv) solid state electrochemistry; (v) ionically-electronically mixed conducting solids. Related technological applications are also included, provided their characteristics are interpreted in terms of the basic solid state properties. Review papers and relevant symposium proceedings are welcome.

Special Issues

Special Issue on Solid State Proton Conductors (SSPC-22) Día de Entrega: 2026-08-31 This Special Issue (VSI: SSPC-22) brings together selected papers presented at the 22nd International Conference on Solid State Proton Conductors (SSPC-22), held in Lyngby, Denmark, in September 2025. The issue will highlight recent advances in the design, synthesis, characterization, and applications of proton-conducting materials, as well as emerging insights into their electrochemical and structural properties across a broad temperature range. Both invited contributions and high-quality submissions from conference participants will be included. The Special Issue aims to capture the state-of-the-art in protonic and mixed conducting materials and their related electrochemical devices. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Fundamental studies of proton transport mechanisms in solids Design and synthesis of new proton-conducting oxides, polymers, and composites Interfaces, grain boundaries, and defect chemistry of protonic conductors High-temperature and intermediate-temperature proton exchange membranes Electrochemical performance in fuel cells, electrolysers, hydrogen sensors, and related devices Computational and theoretical modeling of proton migration and defect energetics Advanced characterization techniques, including in-situ and operando methods Materials stability, degradation, and lifetime under operating conditions The Special Issue welcomes both original research articles and comprehensive reviews covering experimental and theoretical developments that advance the field of solid state proton conduction and related electrochemical energy conversion systems. Special Issue on Diffusion and Reactions in Solids - Honoring Paul Heitjans on the occasion of his 80th birthday Día de Entrega: 2026-10-15 This Special Issue covers diffusion, transport, and reaction phenomena in solids, from fundamental ion dynamics and correlated motion to interfaces, solid-state reactions, and functional materials for energy and electrochemical applications. Wilkening Graz University of Technology, Graz, Austria Dr. Thomas Bredow University of Bonn, Bonn, Germany Prof. Dr. Harald Schmidt Clausthal University of Technology, Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Germany Special issue information: Solid State Ionics is pleased to announce a forthcoming special issue dedicated to diffusion, transport, and reaction processes in solids. Ionic motion and reactivity in condensed matter are of central importance not only for modern applications such as solid-state batteries, fuel cells, sensors, electrochemical devices, electrolysis systems, and memristive technologies, but also for fundamental research addressing atomic-scale dynamics, disorder, correlation effects, interfaces, non-equilibrium phenomena, and structure–property relationships. The aim of this special issue is to bring together experimental, theoretical, and computational contributions that advance our understanding of ionic transport and solid-state reactivity across a broad range of materials. Topics of interest include ion dynamics and diffusion in crystalline, amorphous, glassy, nanostructured, and composite materials; mixed ionic-electronic conductors; defect chemistry and defect-mediated transport; interface and space-charge phenomena; grain-boundary effects; coupled transport processes; diffusion mechanisms; transport dimensionality (1D, 2D, and 3D diffusion); ion correlation effects; collective and cooperative transport; dynamic heterogeneity; hopping dynamics; and solid-state reaction kinetics. Contributions addressing advanced characterization and modeling approaches are particularly welcome. Relevant methodologies include, but are not limited to, solid-state NMR spectroscopy and relaxometry, pulsed-field-gradient NMR, impedance and dielectric spectroscopy, tracer diffusion techniques, neutron and X-ray scattering, synchrotron-based methods, electron microscopy, operando and in situ techniques, as well as density functional theory, molecular dynamics simulations, kinetic Monte Carlo approaches, machine-learning-assisted materials discovery, and multiscale modeling. The issue further seeks contributions exploring concepts for enhancing ionic conductivity, chemical and electrochemical stability, interfacial charge transfer, and functional performance. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the interplay between structure, defects, disorder, dynamics, and reactivity, and on identifying the microscopic mechanisms governing ion transport and reaction processes. Studies addressing diffusion pathways, activation processes, transport anisotropy, correlated ion motion, dynamic structure–property relationships, and ion transport across interfaces are especially encouraged. We welcome contributions from both experimentalists and theoreticians that provide new insights into diffusion and reaction phenomena in solids and their wider implications for materials science, electrochemistry, energy technologies, solid-state physics, and related disciplines.
