Aims & Scope An Interdisciplinary Journal of Materials Science and Solid–State Chemistry and Physics General Perspective - The Journal of Alloys and Compounds is an international peer-reviewed medium that disseminates original work for the advance of the science of materials comprising compounds and alloys. Its great strength lies in the diversity of disciplines that the journal encompasses, drawing together results from materials science, physical metallurgy, solid-state chemistry, and condensed matter physics. The interdisciplinary nature of the journal is evident in many subject areas, including experimental and theoretical approaches to materials problems that require an active interplay between a variety of traditional and emerging scientific disciplines. - The Journal of Alloys and Compounds provides a unique international forum where materials scientists, chemists, and physicists present their results both to researchers in their own fields and to others active in related areas. The work published in the journal should comprise studies on synthesis and structure combined with investigations of chemical and physical properties of alloys and compounds, contributing to the development of areas of current scientific interests. Manuscripts submitted for publication should contain new experimental and/or theoretical results and their interpretation. Submissions of timely, authoritative, and comprehensive reviews commensurate with the scope of the journal require pre-approvals by the members of the Editorial Board that have relevant expertise. - The Journal of Alloys and Compounds does not consider topics on liquid alloys, steels, wear, creep, welding and joining, organic materials and polymers, coordination chemistry, ionic liquids, catalysis (unless combined with microstructural analysis and other materials properties), and biochemistry. Manuscripts describing only syntheses and characterization without any properties, devices and/or their performance, purely computational results (including CALPHAD) without sufficient experimental validation, or technical reports are out of the journal scope. The submission of articles related to technology of materials and materials processing is discouraged. First-principles calculations may only be considered if a material has already been proven in experiment, or if predictions have a clear potential to advance a dedicated application.

Special Issue on Microstructural Design and Properties of Advanced Structural Materials: Honoring Prof. Nobuhiro Tsuji on his 60th Birthday Día de Entrega: 2026-10-08 The Journal of Alloys and Compounds is pleased to announce a Special Issue honoring the 60th birthday (Kanreki) of Nobuhiro Tsuji, a globally recognized leader in physical metallurgy and microstructure-based alloy science. A central theme of Professor Tsuji’s research has been addressing the long-standing challenge of achieving simultaneous high strength and high ductility in structural alloys, a key objective in modern materials design. Prof. Shuhei Yoshida, PhD Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan Prof. Mitsuhiro Murayama, PhD Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia, USA Special issue information: Through pioneering work on accumulative roll bonding and related severe plastic deformation techniques, Professor Tsuji established fundamental principles governing bulk nanostructured and ultrafine-grained metals. His studies have significantly advanced the understanding of how grain refinement, microstructural heterogeneity, and phase stability influence deformation behavior, dynamic phase transformations, and strain-hardening mechanisms across a wide range of alloy systems, including ferrous, non-ferrous, and complex concentrated alloys. These findings demonstrated that the conventional strength–ductility trade-off can be mitigated through microstructural design enabling the controlled activation of multiple deformation modes. To provide deeper insight into deformation initiation in refined microstructures, the plaston concept was proposed as a unifying atomistic framework in which localized collective atomic excitations at stress or energy singularities act as precursors to defect-mediated plasticity, including dislocation slip, deformation twinning, and martensitic transformation. This Special Issue aims to present state-of-the-art experimental and mechanistic studies linking alloy chemistry, microstructure, and properties, with emphasis on fundamental deformation physics and microstructure-based alloy design. Original research articles and authoritative reviews are invited. Alloy design and phase stability under severe plastic deformation: Fundamental studies on phase stability, metastability, dynamic phase transformations, and solute–defect interactions governing mechanical and physical properties in ferrous, non-ferrous and complex concentrated alloys. Microstructure evolution and Heterogeneity Development: Mechanisms of grain refinement, subdivision, and heterogeneity formation, including gradient and bimodal microstructures, and their thermal and mechanical stability. Deformation-Controlled Structure–Property Relationships: Origin of strength–ductility synergy in ultrafine-grained and nanostructured alloys, including strain partitioning, fatigue resistance, and damage evolution. Fundamental mechanisms governing dislocation activity, TWIP, TRIP, slip–twin interactions, recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth. Thermo-mechanical processing of ferrous, non-ferrous and complex concentrated alloys: Role of accumulative roll bonding, severe plastic deformation, and hybrid thermo-mechanical routes in tailoring microstructures of ferrous, non-ferrous and complex concentrated alloy systems. Mechanism-Driven Advanced Characterization: In-situ and correlative experimental techniques including X-ray and neutron diffraction, electron microscopy, digital image correlation, and atom probe tomography applied to elucidate microstructure evolution and deformation mechanisms.
