Call For Papers

EMMSAD 2026 (Exploring Modelling Methods in Systems Analysis and Design) is a ICORE C conference held in Verona, Italy on 2026-06-08. The paper submission deadline is 2026-03-13 (extended). Acceptance notifications are sent on 2026-04-10.

The field of information and software systems development has resulted in a rich heritage of modeling approaches (e.g. business process modeling, enterprise modeling, value modeling, capability modeling, ontology modeling, and so on). This canon of approaches continuous to be enriched with extensions, refinements, and even new languages, to deal with new challenges. Even with some attempts to standardize (e.g. UML for object-oriented software design, ArchiMate for enterprise architecture modeling, and BPMN for business process modeling), new modeling methods are constantly being introduced, especially in order to deal with emerging trends such as compliance and regulations, cloud computing, big data, business analytics, the internet of things, cyber-physical systems, etc. These introduce challenges to modeling as well: scalability, privacy, security, and performance – to list a few, and may call for extending existing modeling methods or developing new ones. These ongoing changes significantly impact the way systems are being analyzed and designed in practice. Evaluation of modeling methods contributes to the knowledge and understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. This knowledge may guide researchers towards the development of the next generation of modeling methods and help practitioners select the modeling methods most appropriate to their needs. A variety of empirical and non-empirical evaluation approaches can be found in the literature: feature comparison, meta-modeling, metrics, paradigmatic analyses, contingency identification, ontological evaluation, surveys, laboratory and field experiments, case studies, and action research. Yet, there is a paucity of such research in the literature. The objective of the EMMSAD conference series is to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners interested in modeling methods for Systems Analysis and Development (SA&D) to meet and exchange research ideas and results. This includes standardized modeling methods (e.g. UML, ArchiMate, and BPMN) as well as new modeling methods that deal with emerging trends and technologies: Digital Transformation, Digital Twins, Digital Ecosystems, Big Data, Industry 4.0, IoT, Cyber-physical Systems, Blockchain, AI, etc. EMMSAD provides the participants an opportunity to present their research papers and experience reports, and to take part in open discussions. We solicit papers in the following five tracks: Track 1: Foundations of modeling & method engineering Chairs: Anne Gutschmidt, Istvan David Definition and representation: conceptual modeling, metamodeling, method knowledge infrastructure, and method ontologies Agility in modeling and method engineering Situational method engineering Adaptation, extension, and configuration of methods and tools Maturity and quality of models and methods Evolution and interoperability of models Modeling and method engineering for emerging computing technologies and approaches Ethical foundations of modeling Teaching and learning of modeling & method engineering Track 2: Enterprise, business, process & capability modeling Chairs: Jānis Grabis, Georgios Koutsopoulos Enterprise modeling approaches, architectures, and platforms Business models and ecosystems Modeling data-driven organizations Business process modeling, architectures, and evolution Reference modeling Capability-driven development Track 3: Information Systems (IS) & requirements modeling Chairs: Arnon Sturm, Kristina Rosenthal Model-Driven development & Low/No-Code tools Modeling in agile development Crowd-based and collaborative modeling Social media, user-generated content modeling Traceability between software artifacts Experience in practice and education Challenges of requirements for and modeling emerging applications Track 4: Domain-specific & knowledge modeling Chairs: Robert Clarisó, Tiago Prince Sales, Glenda Amaral Metamodel and model engineering Design of Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs) and supporting tools Multi-level and multi-perspective modeling Knowledge graphs Ontology and domain-specific analogy Applications of/with ontology and Domain-Specific Modeling (DSM) Track 5: Evaluation of models & modeling approaches Chairs: Qin Ma, Monique Snoeck Empirical / Experimental evaluation techniques Formal evaluation Evaluation through practice Evaluation through model simulation New methods for model or modeling evaluation Ontological-based evaluation and comparison Evaluation of MDD-based methods and tools Applications in education
